The Joys of Doing Absolutely Nothing…

Most of us have completely overscheduled lives, as our calendars are packed with school activities, sports practices and games, concerts and dance recitals, play dates, doctors’ appointments and more.  One of the great joys of summer is the ability to occasionally kick back and do absolutely nothing except enjoy each other’s company - and reconnect as a family.

Take a break from your hectic lifestyle, even if it’s only for an occasional day here and there.  Slow down and enjoy quality time with your kids, without worrying that you’re going to be late for your next appointment or frantically checking off items on your “to do” list.

Try the following lazy day non-activities:

  • Catch and release fireflies on a warm summer evening.
  • Play board games.
  • Stay in your jammies and read books.
  • Watch a movie and eat popcorn.  Or have a cartoon marathon and watch with your kids.
  • Listen for the ice cream truck.
  • Ignore your to do list.  No laundry or errands allowed!
  • Look at family photo albums.
  • Play video games with your kids.
  • Bring flowers, homemade cookies or veggies from your garden to your next door neighbor - for no reason at all.
  • Order pizza and have a picnic.
  • Ask your kids questions - make them zany! - and listen carefully to their answers.
  • Blow bubbles.
  • Make homemade popsicles.
  • Color in coloring books.
  • Stare at the sky and discuss the shape of the clouds.
  • Make s’mores.

What are your family’s favorite “do nothing” activities?
