Why Hire a Babysitter?

You are a first-time parent.  Why should you hire a babysitter for your new little bundle of joy?

1.      So you and your spouse or partner can have a date night periodically.  These date nights keep the spark going in your relationship when breast pumps, dirty diapers, and regurgitated milk would otherwise diminish the spark.

2.      So baby can be socialized to a variety of people.  Getting baby comfortable being handled by a trusted group of people (i.e., family members, friends, neighbors, and a babysitter, to name a few) helps baby learn to trust and bond with more than just you and your spouse or partner.

3.      So you can maintain your activities outside of childrearing.  Are you used to going for five-mile runs every morning?  Do you enjoy taking an art class every semester from your local community college?  Do you like to volunteer your time at the local animal shelter?  Don’t lose those activities that are central to who you are now that you’ve added motherhood to your self-definition.

4.      So baby can be exposed to a variety of good influences and skills.  For example, if your babysitter is multilingual, ask her to speak in those languages to your child.  Early exposure to diverse languages can increase a child’s language acquisition.

5.      So you can return to work if you wish or need to do so.

6.      So your family members and friends don’t feel “on the hook” for providing childcare for your baby.

7.      So you can have some time to decompress periodically.  Parenting can be stressful.  Take time to sit by yourself in quiet contemplation or engage in other tasks that help you decompress.  Maintaining your elevated stress level is not only bad for you, it’s also bad for your baby because, when you are stressed, baby senses and reacts to that.

8.      So baby can have one-on-one attention and avoid the massive childhood germ exposures of daycare centers (think of dozens of little runny, sniffly noses).

9.      Because hiring a well chosen babysitter is in the best interests of all involved.

In sum, as a first-time parent, hiring the babysitter that is right for your new little bundle of joy is important for you, your spouse or partner, and your baby in the way that you each live your lives and relate to each other.
